Types by Pose
The pose changes the entire personality of a lion — from guardian to showpiece to gentle companion.
Sitting / guardian lion
Upright, alert, front paws planted, head high. This is the classic entrance lion, and it is the pose of most pairs you see flanking doors and gates. It reads instantly as protection and dignity.
Roaring lion
Mouth open, mane spread wide, chest thrust forward. The roaring lion is the most dramatic type, chosen for grand gates, castles and places that want to make an unmissable impression. In marble it shows off the carver's skill in the open jaws and teeth; in bronze it becomes almost theatrical.
Lying / reclining lion
Relaxed, resting on its forepaws or fully stretched out. The reclining lion is the softest type — still regal, but calm. It is the classic choice for gardens, terraces, pool sides and anywhere the mood is serene rather than formal.
Walking / striding lion
Caught mid-stride, tail up, moving forward. Walking lions are the type you see along long driveways and processional routes, where they create a sense of movement and arrival. The Lion of Judah and many civic lions use this pose.
Lion with ball / with cub
The traditional paired version: the male rests a paw on a sphere, the female guards a cub. Together they symbolize power and the family line. This type is especially popular in the Chinese guardian tradition but works beautifully in Western settings too.
Types by Material
Material decides the look, the feel and the longevity of the lion. Three materials dominate the outdoor market.
Marble lion statues
Hand-carved from solid natural stone. Marble is the material of palaces, châteaux and memorials — formal, monumental, unmistakably permanent. It suits stone, stucco and classical architecture, and it ages with dignity, developing a soft patina over the decades. Available in white, black, beige, gray, red and more.
Bronze lion statues
Cast in solid bronze, then finished with a patina — antique brown, black, green or gold. Bronze achieves detail that stone cannot, from the texture of the mane to the expression in the eyes, and it gains beauty as it ages. It is the heirloom material, the type collected and passed down through generations.
Stainless steel lion statues (geometric)
Welded from mirror-polished or colored stainless steel, geometric lions are abstract, angular interpretations of the lion — sometimes almost cubist, sometimes a smooth flowing silhouette. They are the unmistakably modern type: contemporary villas, hotels, offices and public spaces use them to make a design statement. Stainless steel is also virtually maintenance-free and never rusts.
Types by Style
- Classical European — naturalistic, majestic, descended from Greek and Roman prototypes. Think Italian villas and French châteaux.
- Chinese guardian — stylized, broad-chested, often with spheres and cubs. The tradition behind "Foo Dogs."
- Modern geometric — abstract stainless steel or simplified stone. For contemporary architecture.
- Mythological — winged lions, merlions, Nemean lions. Lions with a story attached.
